Hey Adri,
Okay – British royalty. Not quite the London postcard you were expecting, I suppose! But it’s a curious, iconic monument in this country. The royal family has such a distinct place in popular culture that it’s hard not to notice. Every other day I find some piece in the news about the Princes; Harry (for his infamous partying) or William (and his RAF stints or his relationship with his girlfriend).
Where I come from, the King/Sultans/royals really only make it to the news for 1) ribbon-cutting, 2) baby-kissing or 3) charity events.
The royal posse in this country? They’re as popular as celebrities; as page-three-worthy as Paris Hilton or the latest X-Factor winner. They’ve been talked about in every possible way, in the news and gossip mags, through art and sculpture.
But I thought: has anyone chronicled the royal family through drink? And if they had — what were they like? Dry? Fruity?? Mild as Pimm’s or inconspicuously potent like a Long Island?
Mickael and I were hanging out the other day when I asked him what he’d make if the Queen or one of her grandkids walked into his bar. “A wicked boozer for Harry”; “something strong and dignified for Her Majesty”, he told me.
So we took all the best gin and vodka off his shelves and headed out to see what we’d come up with. Mickael set up makeshift bars outside the Palace and around Hyde Park, mixing martinis for the monarchy in 6°C weather.
The results: a royally delicious afternoon tipple, and my renewed fascination with British royalty.
